Everything seems to be against him: the location, the equipment--and above all, the messy personal lives of everyone he has conned, cajoled, and convinced to participate. All of the actors have been in this kind of movie before, so they bring their first-hand experiences to their performances. This excellent sleeper art-house flick makes fun of all art-house flicks. As I was drawing this strip I remember thinking to myself that journalism was in a terrible state if it had to refer to the fact that a fraud dressed like a woman in order to get a little coverage, and gee, what was next reporting on robbers with excessive tattoos? And then I remembered that I recently did a strip about a news report about a robber with excessive tattoos, and the Edward R. Murrow in me died a little more.

The Comic Critic Reviews The Secret Life of Bees

Several friends have already commented that my critique of this movie is a bit too harsh. They thought it struck the perfect balance of harsh topics with a smooth storyline, making it suitable for family viewing. I could not help but notice that those who made this argument were all women who enjoy a good tearjerker. It was then that I realized that this is a family-oriented chick flick. Now, I have to warn you guys, your eyes just might dampen. I know that I got a little misty at 20,000 feet watching The Secret Life of Bees on a Delta flight. Thankfully, my manliness was spared embarrassment since the cabin lights were off. With that in mind, I give it one-more-point-than-a-five (that would be a six). If you want a full-length version of its storyline (with some grit), read the novel.
